How to Replace an audi key fob replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

woman-showing-the-car-keys-2022-12-16-22-09-32-utc-min-scaled.jpgIn this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Check for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When i crank the engine, there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero Ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or a parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines requires to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could lead to an engine shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when you are in gear. If you experience any of these issues it is likely that your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. The good news is that they are quite affordable and readily available particularly in the case of a Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your car. It's a vital component of the audi q7 key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU is then able to process this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, car key cover audi timig and boost, and also sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points. This is a standard component across the audi q5 key 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones could be available in wrecking yards.
